The "sick" man was a little sassy. Ignorance and a tyrant, I think I can see the similarities. The fact that they were able to talk like humans was kind of cool. I never get to see that with Americans.
Jean Valjean in this chapter made me believe that he did undergo a change. I've never once read that someone was using learning to convert it to master the ways of evil. I can see how instinct was playing a big part in how the process Jean Valjean went through to come out different than when he first got into prison.
I wish we saw that more often. :)
