ps. the last clip didn't show up only the audio but the text just basically said, " A b+ because I have a lot of assignments so a few are bound to be missing".

LES MIS BK 2 CH 7

Jean Valjean in this chapter made me believe that he did undergo a change. I've never once read that someone was using learning to convert it to master the ways of evil. I can see how instinct was playing a big part in how the process Jean Valjean went through to come out different than when he first got into prison.
